AGENTS OF CHANGE

SCIENCE WEEK 2025

Let’s celebrate the power of change and adaptation together this Science Week.

Rethink Food invites you to make British Science Week 2025 unforgettable! Our Agents of Change programme is packed with exciting activities that bring science to life through food. Dive into five engaging themes that help children explore the fascinating relationship between food, science, and the world around us. Each session includes fun experiments, interactive films, and hands-on missions to inspire your young scientists.

How to Get Involved

It’s easy to bring Science Week to your classroom with Agents of Change! Each session includes:

  • Engaging films to introduce key concepts.
  • Downloadable resources and step-by-step guides.
  • Hands-on missions to inspire curiosity and critical thinking.

Join us in celebrating British Science Week 2025 and help your students explore how food changes people and the planet. Together, we’ll inspire the next generation to take action for a healthier, more sustainable world.

What’s inside each experiment?

Here’s what students can look forward to during Science Week:

Human Digestion

Session Focus: How does food change in the body during digestion?

Activity Highlight: Make a Poo!

Students will create a model of the digestive process using everyday items like crackers, bananas, and tights. This hands-on activity demonstrates how food is broken down and absorbed by the body. It’s a fun and messy way to learn about human biology and the importance of a healthy diet.

Food Decay

Session Focus: What happens when food decays over time?

Activity Highlight: Decay Detectives!

Using bread, milk, and fruit, students will observe and record the signs of decay over several days. This session teaches the importance of food storage and hygiene, while sparking discussions about waste reduction and sustainability.

Greenhouse Gases

Session Focus: How does food waste contribute to greenhouse gas emissions?

Activity Highlight: Gassy Garbage Experiment!

Students will place fruit and vegetable scraps in bottles with balloons on top, watching as decomposition creates gas that inflates the balloons. This visual experiment explains the connection between food waste and climate change.

Thermal Insulators

Session Focus: How do different materials change how long the soup stays warm?

Activity Highlight: Keep soup warmer for longer!

Students will explore which material is the best insulator of heat by timing how long it takes for liquid to cool in the cups made of different materials. Then apply what has been learned to select the best type of cup to serve homemade vegetable soup!

Dissolving and Solutions

Session Focus: How does temperature affect dissolving?

Activity Highlight: Sugar Solutions!

Students will experiment with dissolving sugar in hot and cold water, exploring how temperature impacts solubility. They’ll record their findings and discuss real-world applications, such as food preparation and preservation.

Become a Science Star

Have you completed all the experiments?

Activity Highlight: Science Stars!

If you’ve completed any of these exciting experiments, congratulations – you’re a Science Star! Celebrate your achievement by downloading your official Science Star Certificate. Display it proudly and let the world know you’re making discoveries and taking action for a healthier, more sustainable planet.
