I have worked in food insecurity for over a decade, here is what experience has taught me…

Crisis support is essential.

But crisis support alone will never solve the crisis. We must respond.

No child should sit in a classroom hungry.

But if we stop at response, we create a revolving door.

In my opinion, to address the root cause of food insecurity we must;

  • Respond
  • Stabilise
  • Redesign

Respond protects dignity in the moment.

Stabilise addresses what sits beneath the empty cupboard, debt, housing insecurity, mental health pressure, unstable income.

Redesign tackles the structural conditions that shape life chances in the first place, education, skills, employment, prevention.

For years, much of our national effort has focused on the first layer.

It is visible. It is urgent. It feels tangible.

But if we are serious about reducing child poverty and improving long term health outcomes, we must invest across all three.

That is why the National School Pantry Network uses food as a trusted entry point, not the end point.

Food opens the door. Partnerships do the deeper work. Systems change prevents the repeat.

So here is the real question for funders and policymakers.

Are we commissioning relief…or are we commissioning redesign?

Because one manages the symptom. The other changes the trajectory.
