Over the summer I recorded a promotional video celebrating Rethink Food’s work with Signature Flatbreads and the Curious Kids Club collaboration. As the sound engineer clipped on my microphone, he casually said: “You know, I used this same mic with Tom Cruise last week.”
Tom Cruise. Mission Impossible. Top Gun. Running at full speed in every film he’s ever made.
And now… me.
Talking about child poverty and school food security.
I had a brief moment where I wondered whether the mic felt disappointed.
From Hollywood action hero to a bloke from Yorkshire talking about health equity.
But then I thought about it differently.
That microphone doesn’t care about status. It carries stories.
One week it amplifies blockbuster films. The next it amplifies conversations about child hunger, schools, and building healthier futures.
Different worlds. Same tool. Same purpose.
Maybe that’s the link.
Because whether you’re hanging off a plane or standing in a school hall, the real power is in what you choose to use your voice for.
