Can you create a climate friendly pizza?

Every year Earth Day occurs on 22nd April, providing an opportunity to celebrate the planet we live on and to take positive climate action.

Rethink Food and the University of York have launched a food and climate change-themed school resource, Planet Pizza.

Planet Pizza is an investigative resource designed to inspire and empower the next generation to make food choices that are good for people and the planet.

Here’s what you can expect from Planet Pizza:

  • Engaging activities and resources to spark conversations about sustainability and climate action.
  • Interactive discussions about the environmental impact of food choices.
  • Hands-on learning experiences to explore the concept of sustainable food choices.
  • Opportunities for learners to take action and make a positive difference in their communities.

Did you know one-third of all greenhouse-gas emissions that cause climate change come from food!   Planet Pizza incorporates the Take a Bite Out of Climate Change food flashcards which connect with the book published by Professor Sarah Bridle: ‘Food and Climate Change – Without the Hot Air’.

Professor Sarah Bridle, Chair in Food, Climate and Society at the University of York commented:

“Around one third of the greenhouse gas emissions that cause climate change come from food, but we know that as well as being part of the problem, food can be part of the solution.

It’s been fantastic to develop Planet Pizza from the beginnings of an idea at a workshop at the University of York last year, into a brilliant and accessible activity that will empower children to engage and think critically about the impact our food choices have on the planet.”

An animation created by Rethink Food brings the resource to life and provides a fun and interactive way to connect with important global issues.  Learners are transported into the Planet Pizza restaurant and given the task of creating a climate-friendly pizza. There is also a film and notes to support teachers and downloadable classroom resources.

Melanie, Education Director at Rethink Food added:

“Planet Pizza provides an immersive and purposeful learning experience, placing learners in the role of the expert to create a climate-friendly pizza.

The main aim is to raise awareness of the impact of food choices on the environment by comparing food in terms of greenhouse gas emissions and using this to rethink food choices. Using action learning methodology, children are given a problem, supported to explore and discuss solutions, and empowered to take positive action!”
