We have been working hard this week delivering assemblies to unite schools on World Day of Social Justice to confront the injustice of food insecurity faced by UK families this week.
One of the schools we attended was St. Philip’s Catholic Primary School in Middleton, Leeds.
Kevin Mackay, co-founder of Rethink Food was at the assembly and commented: “As part of our World Day of Social Justice assembly we’re using the day to highlight the injustice of food insecurity. Young people will be learning about healthy eating, sustainable eating and what they can do to take positive action towards inequalities that we have in our society around food.”
Kevin outlines what’s getting kids interested in our assemblies: “When we started out the environmental hook was incredible, that young people were eating the save the planet and we’ve really developed that.
This particular assembly and programme that follows is called Agents of Change and it’s all about young people being those agents and making those changes we want to see for themselves and for the planet by just learning about where food comes from, how it gets here, and how they can makes sustainable choices has probably been the biggest hook I’ve seen.”
The kids speak…
How was the assembly?
“It was good, informative and it talked a lot about climate change and how we can save the world.”
“I feel like it could help inform people about the importance of not wasting food because food waste is one of the biggest contributors to global warming.”
“Beforehand I didn’t really know a lot about climate change but now I know that we can grow plants to help us stop eating unhealthy things.”
“I now know how we can help the planet and how we can prevent a lot of bad things happening.”
