This year, the UK’s biggest annual food waste reduction campaign is back, running from 17–23 March 2025. At Rethink Food, our mission is simple: we want more people across the UK to understand why buying loose fruit and vegetables is better for reducing food waste, saving money, and protecting our planet.
When you choose loose fruit and vegetables, you have greater control over how much you buy, reducing the likelihood of excess that ends up in the bin. Pre-packaged produce often forces you to purchase more than you need, contributing to unnecessary waste. By opting for loose options, you can buy exactly what you need, which helps you:
- Minimise waste: Purchase only what you can consume.
- Save money: Avoid paying for extra produce you won’t use.
- Support sustainable practices: Reduce packaging waste and lower your environmental footprint.
Here are some simple, practical tips to help you avoid food waste and make the most of your shopping experience:
- Plan Your Shopping
- Make a List: Write down exactly what you need for the week. Stick to your list to avoid impulse purchases.
- Meal Planning: Plan meals around ingredients you already have to minimise buying duplicates.
- Buy Loose Produce
- Measure Carefully: Purchase the exact amount you need – don’t be afraid to ask for help at the store.
- Inspect Before Buying: Choose fruit and vegetables that are at their peak, ensuring they last longer at home.
- Store Food Properly
- Use Airtight Containers: Keep cut fruits and veggies fresh by storing them in the right containers.
- Learn Storage Techniques: Some produce lasts longer when stored in the fridge, while others do better at room temperature. Check best practices for each type.
- Get Creative with Leftovers
- Reinvent Meals: Transform leftovers into new dishes. A wilted salad can become a hearty soup or a vegetable stir-fry.
- Freeze for Later: If you can’t use all your produce immediately, freeze it for smoothies or cooking later.
- Compost When Possible
- Organic Waste: Set up a small compost system to turn food scraps into nutrient-rich compost for your garden.
- Community Programs: Participate in local composting initiatives if setting up your own isn’t feasible.
Food Waste Action Week is a call to action for everyone – from families and schools to communities and businesses – to rethink how we shop, store, and use food. By choosing loose produce and adopting smarter shopping and cooking habits, you can make a big difference in reducing food waste.
