By Nathan Atkinson, Co-founder of Rethink Food
Ten years ago, a simple phrase changed my life and set me on a path I never anticipated. A child in the school where I was Headteacher said, “I’m hungry,” and I felt a profound urgency to address hunger as a barrier to learning. That moment led me to make a commitment that has fuelled my work ever since. I left my role in education to co-found Rethink Food, a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to eradicating hunger in schools, supporting food security, and delivering quality education to inspire health and wellbeing in children across the UK.
A Decade of Growth and Impact
Since its founding, Rethink Food has impacted thousands of children, providing meals and educational resources to schools across the UK. Our mission to deliver 10 million hours of education that champions health, wellbeing, and food security is rooted in that first encounter with a child’s hunger and has continued to expand to meet the needs of young people.
In reflecting on this journey, a few key milestones stand out:
- Commitment to Food Security and Education
Leaving a career in teaching wasn’t easy, but it was necessary to focus on this mission full-time. Working alongside Kevin Mackay, Rethink Food was born with the ambition of bringing health education into the lives of students. Together, we’ve aimed to empower children to make sustainable choices that benefit themselves and their communities. - Policy Changes and National Support
The government’s upcoming universal free breakfast club pilot, beginning in April 2025, signifies an incredible step forward. Schools will be equipped to provide students with the nutrition they need at the start of each day, something we believe is foundational to learning and growth. - Holiday Activity and Food Programme
It’s not just the school year that matters; the Holiday Activity and Food Programme ensures that children can continue to receive nutritious meals during breaks, addressing seasonal food insecurity and promoting a holistic approach to child wellbeing. - Power of Community Support
Rethink Food’s progress wouldn’t be possible without the support of people, businesses, and communities who have joined forces with us. Their contributions and partnerships have amplified our work, helping us reach more children and create more opportunities for sustainable, impactful change.
Future Priorities in Education and Wellbeing
Reflecting on the journey, a few important areas still require action:
- Health and Wellbeing of Children and Young People
Improving overall health remains a top priority. Food access has progressed, but we must ensure the nutritional quality supports positive health outcomes. We can’t compromise on this if we’re to support long-term health in children. - Behavioural Change and Sustainability
We believe in the power of education to change behaviours, reduce reliance on crisis support, and foster self-sufficiency. Programmes that encourage informed food choices can help communities build resilience and reduce the demand for emergency interventions.
Our work at Rethink Food is far from finished, but I am grateful for each child, partner, and supporter who has been part of this journey. Together, we’re transforming food education to address critical challenges in health, food security, and sustainability. Thank you for joining us in making “healthy people, healthy planet” a reality for the next generation.
