January is rarely easy. Cold mornings, dark evenings and busy lives can make motivation hard to find. But this year, hundreds of people chose to start 2026 differently, by taking on the 5K Every Day Challenge in support of the National School Pantry Network.
For 31 days, participants committed to moving 5 kilometres every day, running, jogging, walking (and in some cases dancing), whatever worked for them. Some faced snow, ice and freezing temperatures. Others joined in from warmer climates, including participants in Australia running in 35-degree heat. Wherever they were, one thing united them: purpose.
Together, in week one challengers have covered 600 kilometres and raised vital funds to support schools and families across the UK, helping ensure no child starts the school day hungry.
Nathan Atkinson, co-founder of Rethink Food, said:
“This challenge shows the power of everyday action. A simple commitment, moving 5K a day, has turned into real support for schools and families who are under incredible pressure. What’s been most inspiring isn’t just the distance covered or the money raised, but the sense of community that’s formed around doing something meaningful together. This is what change looks like people showing up, day after day, with purpose.”
The funds raised through the challenge will directly support the National School Pantry Network, which provides schools with funding, training and wraparound support to run dignified, stigma-free food pantries for families. At a time when schools are increasingly acting as frontline support for food insecurity, this kind of community-led action is more important than ever.
Kevin Mackay, co-founder of Rethink Food and a participant in the challenge, reflected on the experience from both sides:
“Taking part in the challenge myself really brought home what this is all about. Some days were tough, fitting it in, pushing through the weather but that’s nothing compared to the daily reality many families face. Every step we took represented stability, dignity and support for someone else. On behalf of the National School Pantry Network, I want to say a huge thank you to everyone who took part, you’ve made a tangible difference.”
Thank you to everyone who is taking part, donated, shared, and cheered others on.
