April marks Stress Awareness Month, a time to shine a light on an issue that affects so many – especially those in the teaching profession. At Rethink Food, we work closely with schools and teachers every day, and we see the passion, care, and energy you bring to your role. But we also see the pressure…and it’s real.
With workloads piling up, stretched resources, and the constant emotional labour of supporting pupils, it’s no surprise that teacher wellbeing is under strain. That’s why this Easter break isn’t just a pause…it’s a vital act of self-care.
When teachers thrive, students do too. A calm, supported classroom starts with a calm, supported teacher. Wellbeing isn’t a luxury; it’s the foundation of a healthy school community.
Research shows that when teachers prioritise their own mental health:
- Absenteeism reduces
- Job satisfaction improves
- Relationships with students deepen
- Teaching quality increases
And yet, so many teachers feel guilty about taking time out. Let’s change the narrative.
What You Can Do This Month
Here are a few gentle reminders and ideas to support your wellbeing during the Easter break and beyond:
Reconnect with what brings you joy
Whether it’s time in nature, reading for pleasure, or just a nap in the afternoon sun – do more of what restores you.
Switch off to switch back on
Give yourself permission to unplug from emails, planning, and notifications. Rest is productive.
Prioritise mental space
Journaling, mindfulness, or simply going tech-free for an hour a day can give your mind the breather it deserves.
Don’t go it alone
Reach out. Talk to colleagues, friends, or professionals. Teaching is tough but you don’t have to do it in isolation.
Get inspired
Our Agents of Change programme exists to support health, wellbeing and sustainability in schools and that includes YOU. With bite-sized resources, lesson inspiration, and wellbeing themes built into the content, we’re here to help you help your students and yourself.
At Rethink Food, our mission goes beyond food education…it’s about building healthier, more resilient school communities. That starts with valuing those who make them work: you.
This Stress Awareness Month, we’re asking you to do something radical…be kind to yourself. Rest. Reflect. Reset.
And when you’re ready to return to the classroom, we’ll be right beside you – with resources, support, and a reminder that what you do matters. More than you know.
