Nursery rhymes may feel like simple, playful songs but to young children, they are so much more. They’re learning powerhouses that strengthen early communication, build foundational literacy and maths skills, and support personal, social and emotional development.
To mark World Nursery Rhyme Week, Rethink Food’s Early Years Specialist Melanie Reed shares why these timeless rhymes remain a vital part of early learning and how they help children thrive.
- Building strong communication and language skills
Nursery rhymes expose children to the rhythm and musicality of language. The repetition of sounds and patterns helps them:
- Develop listening and attention
- Build early vocabulary
- Strengthen phonological awareness
- Learn the building blocks of speech
When children chant along, they’re practising articulation, experimenting with new words, and gaining confidence in their communication.
- Laying foundations for early literacy
Rhyme is a core component of pre-reading skills. Through familiar songs, children begin to recognise:
- Similar sounds and patterns
- The concept of sequencing
- How stories are structured
- The joy of playful language
These early literacy foundations will support them throughout Reception and beyond.
- Sneaking in early maths skills
Many nursery rhymes introduce quantities, counting, and simple addition and subtraction without children even realising they’re learning. Think of classics like:
